With Love Island scoring its biggest viewing figures of all time in 2022, ITV2´s hit dating show promises to be bolder than ever before this season. The team at Matchmakers were ready and waiting on the 16th January for the first episode to air and we were not disappointed! Despite negative press and criticism over the years, audiences are still very much enjoying watching hot singles flirting outrageously in the sun. This winter, ITV2 will be showing a new episode every evening (except Sundays) for eight weeks! Mike Spencer, Executive Producer at Lifted Entertainment says - "After eight brilliant series, we are excited to be serving up two helpings of love in 2023 by kicking off in January at a stunning new villa in South Africa. We can look forward to more romances, bromances and everything in between as we embark on another epic year of love."
TV and radio presenter, Maya Jama, will be hosting the show for the first time. Maya explains - "I’ve always been such a massive Love Island fan and I’m so excited to be hosting one of the nation’s favourite shows! I can’t wait to get into the Villa to meet all of the Islanders."
After the tragic death of former host Caroline Flack, many wondered whether Love Island could survive. Caroline was the much-loved face of the show.
Fans questioned whether the relentless press exposure Love Island had bought her was in some way to blame for her personal demons.
Caroline´s close friend, Laura Whitmore, boldly stepped in as presenter of Love Island, working alongside her partner Iain Stirling, who narrates the show. Laura was perhaps less vulnerable than Caroline, with a settled personal life and a steely professionalism. However, she lacked Caroline´s sass and relatability. The show´s popularity continued to grow but Caroline was greatly missed by her fans. She had been the girl next door who teared up with raw emotion when contestants were betrayed by their partners, or when love conquered all.
Perhaps Maya will bring back a little of Caroline´s very real connection with those who selflessly wear their hearts on their sleeves.
